Yes while rutted in several spots I also considered this FR79 a Subaru class road.
It's also important to note that at least three hikes depart from the same point, which is a crossroads about 4 miles out. Directly ahead is a wonderful loop up Arroyo Hondo, then left along the watershed, over to Atalaya if you wish, and then back along the ridge to Sierra Palada. A short bushwack down the mountain takes you back to the car. This is 7 miles and no more than 1,600 ft gain for the entire loop, making it less than the city side of these mountains.
As for the Glorietta Baldy trail, it is 15 mi round trip from this tea intersection, but one can drive on a better road another 3 and 1/2 mi east to just above the bottom of Apache canyon. If one does this you save 900 ft elevation and 6 miles. With a few more tricks we have actually got it down to 8.25!
Clearance of my Subaru was sufficient.
The Forest Road to the trailhead is deeply rutted in parts and requires a high clearance vehicle.
